First play problem. - Thanks for the response. While media might be the cause with older dvd players, you should never, ever, trust power dvd Well, PowerDVD is one of my favourite apps, so I feel I must defend it :) The version I use is XP 4.0, and I've found it to be very good as an "exemplar" DVD player. ADVC-110 Brightness and TBC problems - If you only see the brightness/audio problems when using the stabilizer, the problem is caused by the stabilizer. Windows XP D-Day arrives Monday, June 30 - I worry more about stores such as Best Buy that store my purchase history and tie my credit card to the receipt. I discovered that when I went back to get a credit for something I had bought at full price that was on sale. I presented the receipt and was told they didn't need the card. Sure enough it appeared as a credit on the proper card. Huh ...

8mm to Digital - Capturing w/ DV Camcorder - I just looked at the original source material on the same TV. It's reddish too. So I think I'm gonna leave it alone, at least for now. I noticed also that when I apply color correction, the resolution gets slightly worse on the monitoring TV. So I'm guessing any time we apply any video effects, it degrades the overall image. multiple aspect ratios on one DVD? - Thank you manono! For some reason I thought DVDPatcher only applied to DVDs. Maybe it should be called MPEG2Patcher. dvd player reads "no disk" - 99% isopropyl is 1% water. It evaporates very quickly. Denatured is probably a better choice, but be careful around some plastics. :( The plastics in a DVD mechanism will be no problem, but it may remove some furniture finishes if spilled. It's a bit harder to find than isopropyl at times also. Alcohol is fairly effective for removing grease or ...

Confessions of a D&D Newbie - Recently, I've found myself in the unusual situation of being an experienced gamer with little experience in the game my primary group is playing - and that game happens to be D&D. Many gamers take D&D experience for granted in their new players, which can cause groups to run into trouble when that isn't the case for some players. These are a few of my experiences as a D&D newbie; knowing about them may help you when dealing with new...

What Roles Do We Die For? - Large molded and painted pieces dominate Lego sets of today. They look cool, but can rarely be used for anything other than their original design purpose. The same might be said of the design components of RPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons, which has evolved quite far from its roots. The following article is a critical examination of the loss of narrative interactions in tabletop role-playing, as exemplified by D&D. read more...

Chocolatiers, Both Computer and Tabletop - Enemy Chocolatier is a strategy-based board game from Cheap Ass Games, whilst Chocolatier is a computer "Coffee Break Game" primarily about time management, but with enough strategy thrown in to be interesting. Women in Gaming: Five Years Later - It's been more than five years since I last wrote about women in gaming. In that time, we've seen the end of the World of Darkness, yet another new edition of D&D, the advent of World of Warcraft, and (at least in my opinion) much greater involvement of women around the gaming table. When so much has changed for the better, is the topic of women in gaming even worth exploring anymore? At the very least, I have one new piece of advice for m...

4E's Dragon, Dungeon, and Dark Sun - With today's release of D&D 4th Edition, Wizards has been updating their website in regards to D&D Insider, Dragon, and Dungeon. While there's nothing really new in the Insider section (save the utter lack of the project's health - nothing about the open beta, nothing about the lack of client applications for months, nothing about costs, etc.), we do have tables of content for their two magazines, and Dragon reveals Wizards promise of rev...

The Wheels and Gears of a Good Game - 3 of 3 - In this installment of his column, Gilgamesh talks about secrets and cycles, about getting back to the beginning, about magical curtains that hide secrets, and about using the Great Wheel to re-visit old knowledge from a new perspective. What do you want of Gamegrene? - Gamegrene.com launched back in August 2000 with the release of D&D 3rd Edition. In 2004, it became "Gamegrene 2.0" alongside the releases of the new GURPS, Paranoia, and World of Darkness. With D&D 4th Edition coming in a scant 29 days, you might think I'm trying my damnedest to do something to commemorate the event. And that I am, in between changing my newest daughter, working far too much, and maintaining my achievement whore status. r...

The Shab-al-Hiri Roach Review - The Shab-al-Hiri Roach is a Lovecraftian game of academic satire, designed for a single session of play. Players take on the role of professors at Pemberton University, a New England institute of higher education, in the year 1919. These professors, like those at any other university, jockey with one another for prestige and tenure. The catch? An ancient Sumerian roach-god with telepathic powers is running about, crawling inside heads and using y...
