Roundup from the Charlotte ITEC show - I had the pleasure of providing the keynote speech for the ITEC regional IT conference in Charlotte, N.C. this week and had a great time visiting the area for the first time. Does your phone make you smarter? - We've been hearing a lot lately about how communications technology reduces productivity and makes people stupider ? mainly by interrupting people too often, in too many ways. Some studies have gone so far as to quantify the decline in productivity (25% to 30%) due to multitasking. These researchers imply that we'd all be better off turning off our phones, shutting down instant messaging and e-mail, and logging out of Facebook, MySpace and Linked-In. I think they're nuts. ...

Communal security? - I?ve visited quite a few countries in Asia over the last two years. In the various airports I passed through I often saw people wearing surgical masks. I also saw ?fever checkpoints? in most major airports. These checkpoints have infrared cameras that show a thermal false color picture of passengers as they are funneled through immigration. The signs surrounding the checkpoints indicated that the purpose was to identify people with a fever so as to screen for various types of flu (avian or other). This is classic perimeter control, network access control even, applied in the real world....

All's well with U.S. broadband deployment (says FCC) - Earlier this month, the FCC finally got around to releasing the U.S. broadband deployment report it approved in March. This fifth in a series "examining the availability of advanced telecommunications capability to all Americans" is just as silly as its predecessors. But the report and accompanying order (and further notice for proposed rule-making) on data collection about broadband data services may mean, assuming that the data they get is reasonably analyzed, that future reports may be a bit less silly....

Data leaks out . . . and lawyers rake it in - What made the Ameritrade data breach particularly memorable was not that 6.3 million customers had their personal info compromised and inboxes stuff with spam as a result.
